The World’s fastest EV charging station promises a full battery in under 15 minutes.

The world’s fastest EV charging station is making a great promise with us; there are some fast-charging stations drivers can choose to plug into today, but ABB’s new 360-kilowatt station takes the title of the world’s fastest EV charging station.

The company says any electric car will leave with a full battery in under 15 minutes with this new station. To put that into perspective, the fastest Tesla Supercharger stations unload 250 kWs worth of juice.

The company announced the new station platform on Thursday, and it’s more than just a fast single-unit project. Named the Terra 360, the station can charge up to four cars all at once without sacrificing the juice flow. So even if EV drivers don’t have 15 minutes to spend, ABB said the super-fast rates could provide 62 miles of range in fewer than 3 minutes.

The World’s fastest EV charging station

Swiss engineering company ABB has launched what it claims to be the fastest electric car charger globally, capable of recharging an electric car in just 15 minutes.

One of the downsides of switching to an electric vehicle is how long they take to recharge. Even with the best chargers on the market today, you need to set aside an hour or more if you want a fully restored battery. ABB is promising to change that, though, with its Terra 360 (360 kW) modular charger.

The Terra 360 can recharge up to four vehicles at once. ABB says its new charger can offer 62 miles of range in under 3 minutes when focused on a single-vehicle. To put that in context, Tesla’s Supercharger provides 200 miles of range in 15 minutes, whereas over the same period, you’d get at least 310 miles from the Terra 360.

ABB hopes to have Terra 360 available in Europe by the end of this year before bringing the modular charger to the US, Latin America, and Asia Pacific regions in 2022. ABB is targeting refueling stations, urban charging stations, retail parking, and fleet locations for deployment with its ability to charge four vehicles at once. The footprint of the Terra 360 looks to be similar to that of traditional gas pumps.

If you’ve never heard of ABB before, the company entered the e-mobility market in 2010 and has already sold over 460,000 electric vehicle chargers in 88 markets. With that in mind, the Terra 360 should start popping up at new locations pretty quickly next year. It can customize the chargers with branding and color using LED light strips and an optional 27-inch advertising display for images and video playback.

The Bottom Line

Frank Muehlon, President of ABB’s E-mobility Division, said, “With governments around the world, writing, public policy that favors electric vehicles and charging networks to combat climate change, the demand for EV charging infrastructure, especially charging stations that are fast, convenient, and easy to operate is higher than ever. The Terra 360, with charging options that fit a variety of needs, is the key to fulfilling that demand and accelerating e-mobility adoption globally.”

“It’s an exciting day for ABB, who, as the global leader in electric vehicle fast charging, is playing a key role in enabling a low carbon society,” said Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer at ABB. “With road transport accounting for nearly a fifth of global CO2 emissions, e-mobility is critical to achieving the Paris climate goal. We will also lead by example by switching our entire fleet of more than 10,000 vehicles to non-emitting vehicles,” he added.

ABB will make the new Terra 360 available in Europe by the end of this year. Next year, it will later expand to other countries like the United States, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific regions.
