Over the years Tesla hasn’t seen some real competition in the electric car market and now they have a new rival, the Ford Mustang Mach-E which competes with Tesla Model Y. With this new competition, now it is a good time to do a little Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y comparison and find out which one is the best.
In this article, we are going to compare the Ford Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y and see which one is the best electric car out of the two.
Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y
Basic Comparison
Ford Mustang Mach-E | Tesla Model Y | |
Acceleration(0-60MPH) | 6 seconds | 4.8 seconds |
Top Speed | 124mph | 155mph |
Range | 270 miles | 316 miles |
Charge Time | 90 miles in 15 minutes | 162 miles in 15 minutes |
Battery Capacity | 88KWh/68KWh | 75KWh |
Trunk(back seats down)+ Front Trunk Space | 64.4 cubic feet | 68 cubic feet |
Touchscreen | 15.5-inches | 15-inches |
Now that we have all the basic stats on both the EVs, it is time to compare them side-by-side on some of the parameters and see which one outshines the other.
Looks
The Mustang Mach-E is the electronic crossover of the classing American muscle car, the Ford Mustang and it has been ingrained into people’s minds. On the other hand, Tesla Model Y looks very neat and cool in terms of design.
We know that Elon Musk isn’t a fan of handles so to open gates for Tesla Model Y, you get some very stylish and minimalistic levers that operate very smoothly, on the other hand, Mustang Mach-E took a completely different approach and it has only touch buttons to open the doors.
You see that beauty and looks are very subjective. However, the Mustang Mach-E looks slightly better with that Mustang design which makes it more appealing. So in terms of looks, Ford did a great job with the Mustang Mach-E.
Performance
In terms of performance, the three main things to keep in mind are acceleration, top speed, and range as we are talking about EVs here. So in the acceleration department, the Tesla Model Y has better acceleration compared to Mustang Mach-E. Mustang Mach-E goes 0-60MPH in mid 6 seconds and Tesla Model Y goes 0-60 in 4.8 seconds.
However, when it comes to top speed, the Tesla Model Y outperforms the Mustang Mach-E convincingly and Tesla Model Y also offers a bit extended range compared to Mustang Mach-E.
Charging and Battery Capacity
When we talk about Electric vehicles, charging and battery capacity are the most important ISPs. In this area too, Tesla outperforms the Mustang Mech-E as it has better battery efficiency and optimization.
Mustang Mach-E actually has two battery options. You can either get the 88KWh battery or the 66kWh battery. The Mustang Mach-E has two options, you can either get a 4-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. On the other hand, Tesla Model Y only has a 4-wheel drive option.
If you are on a road trip, and you have Mustang Mach-E as your drive, then you will have to use third-party chargers from Electrify America or other companies. You can’t use Tesla’s charging stations which are available in various locations in the US as the Mustang Mach-E is not part of the Tesla ecosystem. So for long trips, you will be very safe with the Tesla Model Y and you will have to look for creative methods if you have the Mustang Mach-E.
Driving Comfort
Ford is a very old and renowned car manufacturer in America and they know a thing or two about building cars. So that doesn’t change, The Mustang Mach-E offers superior comfort and overall better ride on the road.
This does not take anything away from Tesla Model Y, as it is at par with the Mustang Mach-E when it comes to driving comfort and riding experience on the road.
However, Ford has tried to do some cost-cutting wherever they could like putting plastic on near the steering and all, and that reflects when you drive the Mustang Mach-E.
Interior and Touchscreen
In Tesla Model Y, you have the 15-inch touchscreen which is used to do all the work on the car. It can be used to do anything like controlling the heating of seats, opening glovebox, and a lot of other stuff.
But that’s it, apart from the Touchscreen tablet, steering, and some controls on the steering, you do not have anything on the Tesla Model Y and that looks a bit empty and minimalistic. You just have an empty dashboard. It takes some time to learn the whole thing but once you know how to operate it, everything works really smoothly.
On the other hand, you get a 15.5-inch touchscreen tablet on the Mustang Mach-E, not only that, but you also get a second display right behind the steering that shows speed and other stuff just like a traditional car. The touchscreen also has a knob. However, the OS on the Mustang Mach-E isn’t as smooth as Tesla’s and it is quite bloaty when you see it.
The touchscreen on Tesla is a lot efficient, clean, and easy-to-use compared to Mustang Mach-E and the Mustang Mach-E has an additional screen which is not something very drastic but definitely adds up in the pros of the car.
Storage
Both of the cars offer about the same storage space which is 64.4 cubic feet. However, the Tesla Model Y offers extra 4 cubic feet which makes its storage space about 68 cubic feet(with back seats down). So in terms of storage, both of the cars won’t give you any problem.
Small Features
The small features are the aspects that make big differences, it’s those things that one car has and the other doesn’t. One of the things that both cars have is a glass sunroof. The Tesla has a better over-the-air updates system, better controls from the touchscreen, better range, heat pump. The Mustang Mach-E has steering wheel heating, a 360-degree camera, more physical controls like adjustable steering, controls to move mirrors.
Range
This is also one of the important things to keep in mind when comparing two electric vehicles. The Tesla Model Y offers a better range of 316 miles compared to Mustang Mach-E 270 miles. It also has better charging and has charging stations all over the place. So here Tesla Model Y is an obvious winner.
Pricing
The Ford Mustang Mach-E ranges from USD 42,895- USD 60,500. Whereas, the Tesla Model Y ranges between USD 41,990- USD 59,990. The price depends on which model you buy, for example, the “Standard” model of Mustang Mach-E with 0-60 acceleration in 6 seconds, range of 210-230 miles, and choice between single motor or dual motor. Will cost you about USD 43,895.
There is the top model called the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT which will come out later this year somewhere around the summers. It will give you 0-60MPH in 3.5 seconds, with a range of about 230 miles, and will cost about USD 60,500.
The good thing about getting the Mustang Mach-E is that Ford qualifies for the full USD 7,500 EV tax credit which makes Mustang Mach E more affordable.
Bottom Line: Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y
Well, if I were, to be honest, Tesla Model Y is still a better choice over Mustang Mach-E as it outperforms it in pretty much every aspect. However, this doesn’t take away any credibility from the Mustang Mach-E and it is to date one of the best efforts by Ford or any other company to compete with Tesla in the EV market. This also establishes that the future for Ford in the EV market is bright. That was all about Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y.
