Mortal Kombat releases Friday, April 23, simultaneously in theaters and for streaming on HBO Max.
The video cuts off right before the two begin their actual duel, but the lead-up is tense and shows off the film’s bloody and brutal martial arts action. Watch the opening of Mortal Kombat below
One of the more interesting reveals from Mortal Kombat’s first seven minutes is that Bi-Han possesses his ice powers while still a mortal man. That’s true to how he has depicted in the video games.
However, the reboot’s present-day Sub-Zero is brought back from the dead. It wasn’t clear if he always had his powers or if they granted during his resurrection. One thing’s for sure from the clip – Sub-Zero is one of the film’s main villains, and his intro scene establishes him as a cold and brutal foe.
Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s longstanding feud is at the center of the new Mortal Kombat movie. The origins of their rivalry have been moved back in time several hundred years. However, the core beats remain the same from the video games.
As the franchise’s two most iconic fighters, it only fits that they play a significant role in the reboot. From what’s been shown of the movie so far, it looks like the two will have plenty of opportunities to face off on screen.
The Bottom Line
Scorpion’s signature kunai is also shown in the Mortal Kombat opening. Meant as a gardening tool, Hanzo ties a rope around the blade to fashion a makeshift weapon against Bi-Han’s Lin Kuei assassins.
He’ll need every weapon in his arsenal to stand a chance against Sub-Zero, especially since the mortal Hanzo doesn’t appear to wield any magic of his own. Overall, the new clip is an excellent look at what’s to come, and it should get fans excited for Mortal Kombat’s full release on April 23.
