Microsoft is getting ready to announce the biggest update to Windows since Windows 10’s debut in 2015. Even though the company hasn’t officially revealed anything about this update. In a word, all signs point to it offering a significantly different experience for PC users.
In fact, the update is supposed to be so radical that it could lead to a new version number, Windows 11. Though Microsoft hasn’t confirmed the name change, it has strongly hinted at it, both in the artwork for its June 24th press event and the 11 am time.

Soon, Microsoft is going to launch what it’s calling “the next generation of Windows.”
All signs point to it being called Windows 11. While Windows 11 was getting a full version bump when Microsoft said it would use “Windows 10” forever. Above all, that’s not the only reason it’s the next generation of Windows. This is a major major change. It’s representative of a big shift in how Microsoft delivers Windows, but it’s also a big UX overhaul as well.
While a future update of Windows 10 is still called ‘Sun Valley,’ comments by the officials. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella suggests that Windows 11 may be more of a reality than some think.
It looks like we’ll find out very soon, with Microsoft holding a Windows event later this month. The picture itself is telling, with the shade of the Windows logo almost forming an 11, alongside the event starting at 11 am.

Windows 11 is the biggest update in a decade.
Windows 10 is on course to have the longest lifespan of any Microsoft operating system to date. By and large, remaining the latest version almost six years after it first launched. This hasn’t come as a huge surprise – Microsoft’s Jerry Nixon described it as ‘the last version of Windows at the time.
That doesn’t mean Windows 10 now is identical to a version as in 2015, though. Microsoft releases new feature updates twice a year, negating the need for a whole new version.
Biggest update
When CEO Satya Nadella teased Windows 11 at Build, he said that this would be the biggest update to Windows in over a decade.
You might have heard the term Sun Valley tossed around for the last few months. That’s the codename for the big UX overhaul that’s coming with Windows 11. It’s not the codename for the OS as a whole though, just the new UX. It’s meant to make the OS more touch-friendly, something that Windows 10 has struggled with.

The rumored Sun Valley features are far more significant than anything we’ve seen on Windows 10 in recent years. However, they don’t quite justify the ‘next generation of Windows’ description. Should Microsoft bring another major version of Windows to market (be it Windows 11 or something else), expect plenty more changes we haven’t heard about yet.

The Bottom Line
We can’t be sure that Microsoft will ever launch Windows 11, but a 24 June event is subtitled ‘Join us to see what’s next for Windows. It will begin at 11 am ET/4 pm BST/5 pm CET, with presentations from both Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Product Officer Panos Panay.
Understandably, many people have speculated that this is when we’ll see Windows 11 unveiled. There’s a real chance that it’ll be for Windows 10’s 21H2 update, codenamed ‘Sun Valley.’
That’s not expected to roll out until October 2021 at the earliest officially. If Windows 11 does arrive instead, we’d probably be looking at a similar timeframe before people can start downloading it.
The Windows Insider Program opens the possibility of earlier access. Although these are typically early built and have the potential for more bugs.
