According to The Verge, the new name will aim to recast Facebook’s focus on becoming a “metaverse company” rather than a social media company by rebranding its main app as one of many under a particular parent company.

Word on the grapevine is that social media nightmare platform Facebook is planning on changing its name.

This mighty rebrand, according to The Verge, is happening for one reason: the metaverse. But, in more tangible terms, Zuck wants to position Facebook as more than a social media company.

“We don’t comment on rumor or speculation,” Facebook spokesperson Joe Osborne told Insider.

The metaverse typically refers to the loosely defined concept of a virtual space where people can operate virtual and augmented reality-powered avatars. The term metaverse was coined by sci-fi author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 book, “Snow Crash,” but the idea has appeared in popular culture through movies like “The Matrix” and “Ready Player One.”

In other words, when you start up WhatsApp, it won’t say “By Facebook” anywhere. Instead, there’ll be a new moniker in its place.

Looking at from this perspective, the rebranding makes sense. The company has been pumping massive amounts of resources into its upcoming AR products, and THE ZUCKERMAN has been clear about its goals of building the metaverse.

On the other hand… this stinks of nefarious PR.

It’s no secret that Facebook is a fucking hateful mess. The company has a trash reputation, whether it’s the recent whistleblower fiascoignoring teen safety on Instagramthe Cambridge Analytica scandal, or dozens of other things.

That’s fitting because, of course, it’s a trash company.

This potential rebrand wants to counter that fact. The change attempts to dissociate the toxic Facebook name from things like Oculus, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other businesses the company is planning to run.
