One of the companies operating on the Call of Duty franchise, Infinity Ward, has recently tweeted what amounts to a confirmation of a new COD game. The tweet ends with a hint as to what the studio is working on. It appears to be a follow-up to 2019’s Modern Warfare. “Stay Frosty” is a reoccurring quote in the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series, and Infinity Ward is usually the series’ driving force.
Activision has stated that Infinity Ward will be creating Call of Duty 2022, making it increasingly likely that the game will be Modern Warfare 2.
Activision’s famed Infinity Ward team is leading production on this year’s premium and Warzone experiences, according to a financial statement posted last night. The business’s staff is “working on the most ambitious plan in franchise history, with industry-leading innovation and a broadly attractive franchise setting,” according to the corporation.
Neither Activision’s announcement nor Infinity Ward’s involvement confirm the name of this year’s series entry, although rumours dating back to October 2021 indicated that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would be the title.
Although neither Activision’s announcement nor Infinity Ward’s involvement confirm the name of this year’s entry in the series, rumours dating back to October 2021 stated that Call of Duty 2022 will be Modern Warfare 2. The sequel to Infinity Ward’s 2019 film is set in Latin America and is expected to revive the dreaded General Shepherd with the returning ensemble of Captain Price and crew. If Modern Warfare 2 is truly coming later this year, “broadly attractive franchise setting” is most likely referring to this branch of the Call of Duty tree.
Rumours are the sequel to Modern Warfare
Earlier this year, rumours surfaced that a new Modern Warfare sequel may be in the works for 2022, and it appears that this has been verified. Infinity Ward is working on “the most ambitious plan in franchise history,” according to Activision Blizzard’s recent quarterly financial results, released on Thursday.
Last year, industry insider Tom Henderson reported that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released alongside a new Warzone map. According to rumours, COD 2022’s single-player campaign will be centred on a drug battle against the Colombian cartel.
Activision also acknowledged that premium Call of Duty Vanguard sales were down year over year from the prior entry. In Warzone, Black Ops Cold War and the general involvement were both down. While the series’ success is undeniable, COD may require a new infusion of vitality and vigour.
