Apple was really aggressive with its smartphone lineup in 2020. It launched the iPhone SE 2020 in the first half. Then it unveiled four smartphones in the latter half under the iPhone 12 lineup last year. It looks like this work paid off as Apple becomes the number 1 smartphone-maker taking over its biggest competition that is Samsung.
Apple Becomes The Number 1 Smartphone-Maker
According to a research firm Gartner, the success of the iPhone 12 lineup really turned out to be the game-changer as Apple becomes the number 1 smartphone maker in the world.
The Firm’s Data on Apple Becoming the Number 1 Smartphone Maker
The sales data is provided by the firm. If the figures are correct, this makes Apple the top smartphone maker in the world. Also, this is the first time it achieved this milestone since 2016. So finally after half a decade, Apple is back on top of the chain.
In an overall context, Samsung did outsell Apple in 2020. Figures say that Samsung sold 253 million handsets while Apple sold about 199.8 million in entire 2020. So overall Samsung had an 18.8% share of the market and Apple had a 14.8%.
Things got interesting in the last quarter of 2020. According to Gartner, Apple sold 79 million iPhones while Samsung sold 62.1 million. This means that Apple occupied 20.8% of the market share and Samsung managed to capture about 16.2% of the market.
Along with suffering loss in the market share from Apple, Samsung also lost some of its market on the other side. This was mainly from the tough competition from the low-cost handset manufacturers. Xiaomi managed to get in third place in the last quarter of 2020.
